My name is Katie, and I’m an aspiring gardener. In February this year, I decided I’d give our neglected garden some attention and try to make it pretty – or at least presentable. Within a few hours I’d made a lot of plans, but I put them off until the next day… and the next day, we got a foot of snow overnight.

Scotland has had some pretty weird weather lately, like a lot of places have, so for most of March I found myself unable to garden because the place was covered in snow. We’ve only just started getting weather that somewhat resembles the spring months, so yesterday, the 31st of March, I ventured out into the garden for the first time. I didn’t get much done because I didn’t have a lot of time, but I raked the lawn in preparation for mowing it (though the grass, as you can imagine, is looking a bit poorly after March’s big freeze). Today, I’m going to finish up the rest of the lawns (I say lawns as though they’re something very middle class and neat, but really they’re just patches of grass), clean out the greenhouse (which was my brother’s, before he moved out) and hoe some of the dirt into a plantable state.

I’m not too knowledgeable on flowers and plants, but I want a garden that’s relatively cheap (because I’m a student), relatively easy to manage (because I’m a novice) and one that isn’t going to fall apart if I have to neglect it for a few days. As I’ve mentioned before, I have a greenhouse that I’d like to utilize, but it’s unheated, so I’m not sure what I can do with it just yet.

So, that’s all for my intro post, I guess.

Oh, yeah – and with me throughout all this will be this guy.

This is Max! He’s an Aries (like myself) and sociable, lively, and gregarious (unlike myself), though I’m not sure if these traits come from him being an Aries or him being a golden retriever.
